Fire protection and plumbing in the Hunter Valley
Hydrant, sprinkler and booster testing for valley buildings, and hot water, rainwater and drains for the houses.
The Hunter Valley is a region rather than one suburb, so we measure it to Cessnock: about 37 km by road from Thornton, and we're open 24 hours, 7 days.

Valley towns by road from Thornton
From Thornton the valley opens out west: Kurri Kurri and Weston first, then Cessnock and the vineyards around Pokolbin, with Greta, Branxton and Singleton up the New England Highway side.
The towns sit in two council areas. That matters for fire safety paperwork and for backflow, because the council and the water supplier are who your test results end up with.
Pick your town and the enquiry form opens with it entered.

Fire protection for Hunter Valley buildings
Fire protection is the side of our work that reaches furthest from Thornton. It's booked by fire safety providers, strata and real estate managers, and the owners of commercial buildings. The work is routine AS 1851-2012 servicing of hydrants, sprinklers, boosters and hose reels, and new hydrant systems installed and commission tested to AS 2419.1.
In the valley that means the shops, offices and units of Cessnock and Singleton, where about one home in six is a townhouse, flat or apartment, and commercial sites such as the cellar doors, function venues and guest accommodation around Pokolbin. Sites like these can carry hydrants, hose reels and a backflow device on the water service, each on its own test schedule.

Booster flow testing on valley sites
A pump assisted booster flow test drives water through the building's booster with a pump, so the test gear has to come to the site. Ours travels on the trailer in this photo: the pump sits at the kerb and the hoses run across to the booster inlets.
The booster also carries a block plan and a boost and test pressure sign. If the plan or its signs are missing or faded, we make block plans and compliance signs as well.
Councils and water supply in the valley
Two annual checks where the result goes to someone outside the building.
Fire safety
Annual fire safety statement
Each year, a valley building's owner sends its annual fire safety statement to the local council and Fire and Rescue NSW. In the valley the council is Cessnock City Council or Singleton Council, as the table above shows. An accredited practitioner (fire safety) assesses each measure on the statement, so hydrant, sprinkler and hose reel testing needs to be done and recorded before it falls due.
Fire protection servicesBackflow
Backflow device test
Hunter Water supplies the Cessnock area and only small parts of Singleton. On its network, testable backflow devices must be tested every year, and Tim is accredited by Hunter Water to test and install them, under his personal plumbing licence 465005C. Singleton Council runs its own registration and annual testing program for devices on its supply, so tell us which water supply your property is on when you call.
Backflow testing and installsPlumbing for Hunter Valley homes
More than nine in ten homes in Greta, Branxton, Abermain and Weston are separate houses, so the plumbing work here is mostly hot water, gas and drains. Inland is drier too: Bureau of Meteorology gauges average about 740 mm of rain a year at Cessnock Airport and about 650 mm at Singleton, against about 890 mm at East Maitland, next to our base. With less rain to refill a tank, a leaking downpipe or a pump that won't start matters more out here.

Details that help us plan a trip inland
Start with the town and street. The rest tells us which parts and test gear to bring.
Fire systems
- The kind of site: strata, commercial, a venue or accommodation
- What is fitted: hydrants, sprinklers, a booster, hose reels, a fire pump set
- The last test dates on the tags or the logbook, if you have them
- When the annual fire safety statement is due
- Who holds the keys, and where test water can drain away
Plumbing
- Town water or tank water, and which supplier if it's town water
- For hot water, the type and whether it has stopped or is leaking
- For a tank, whether the pump runs, cycles on and off or stays silent
- For drains, the fixtures draining slowly and any water coming up
