Any hour, any day. Calling beats sending a form for anything urgent.

Fire system faults

For building owners, strata and building managers, and the fire safety providers whose technicians find the fault.

  • Hydrant or booster

    Damaged, knocked over or leaking

A car backs into a hydrant, a booster cabinet is hit, or a valve won't stop weeping.

First: keep people clear and leave the valves as they are.

    Hydrant installs and alterations
  • Hydrant main

Water coming up near a hydrant

Wet ground or a pool that won't drain near a hydrant or its pipe run can mean the main underneath is leaking.

First: note where the water is coming up and keep vehicles off it.

    Hydrant inspections and flow testing
  • Fire hose reel

    Leaking, or won't run water

A reel dripping from the hose or the inlet, or one that gives nothing when it's opened.

First: note which reel it is and tell us where it sits in the building.

    Fire hose reels
  • Sprinklers

A valve set leaking or shut down

Water around a sprinkler valve set, or a system someone has turned off. A shut system leaves that part of the building without sprinklers.

First: tell us which valve set it is and what its gauges read.

    Sprinkler inspections
  • Fire pump set

    Won't start, or won't stop

A pump set that fails to run, or keeps running when nothing is calling for water.

First: leave the controller settings alone and call.

Ask about a fire pump set
  • Backflow on a fire service

    A backflow valve leaking

Fire services often carry a testable backflow valve at the connection, and a leaking one wastes water around the clock.

First: note where the water is coming from on the valve.

Plumbing emergencies

For homes, units and commercial premises.

  • Burst or leaking pipe

    Water you can't stop

A split pipe in a wall or ceiling, a failed flexi hose under a sink, or a pipe spraying outside.

First: turn the water off at the meter. On a house it's usually near the front boundary.

    Plumbing services
  • Hot water

No hot water, or the unit is leaking

Electric storage, heat pump, solar or gas: a unit that has stopped, or water pooling around its base.

First: switch an electric unit off at the switchboard, turn a gas unit's gas off, and close the cold valve into the unit.

    Hot water
  • Drains and sewer

    Blocked or overflowing

A gully overflowing in the yard, toilets backing up, or sewage coming up a shower drain.

First: stop using taps, showers and toilets in the house until it's cleared.

    Blocked drains
  • Gas

    A smell of gas

Leave the building, don't use switches, flames or phones inside, and turn the gas off at the meter or the bottle if it's safe to.

First: call the gas faults and emergencies number on your gas bill (on Jemena's NSW network, 131 909). Then call us for the repair.

    Gas fitting
  • Toilets and taps

    Overflowing, or won't stop running

A cistern that won't shut off, a toilet spilling onto the floor, or a tap that won't close.

First: close the small stop tap on the wall behind the toilet or under the basin.

    Taps and toilets
  • Downpipes and tanks

    Overflowing in heavy rain

A blocked downpipe spilling against the house, or a rainwater pump that has stopped.

First: switch the pump off at its power point and keep water away from the walls where you can.

What a fault left overnight can cost

A fire system

The booster is where Fire and Rescue NSW connect their pumper to push water through a building's hydrants. A damaged booster, a leaking main or a shut valve can leave the building short of that water until it's repaired, and it may not show until the day it's needed.

Every fire safety measure on a NSW building's schedule has to be in order for the owner's annual fire safety statement, so a fault found at night still needs its repair on the record.

A plumbing leak

Water from a burst pipe keeps running until it's turned off. In a house it soaks into walls, floors and ceilings. In a unit it can reach the unit below before anyone knows.

What to have ready when you ring

  • Fire safety providers

    • The defect your technician found
    • The site address and contact
    • The figures on the boost and test pressure sign, if the job is a booster
  • Strata and building managers

    • Who meets us on site, or where the keys are
    • Which valve room, riser or plant room
    • Whether tenants need to know
  • Commercial owners and real estate managers

    • The address and the tenant's name
    • Opening hours and access
    • Who approves the repair
  • Homeowners

    • What's happening and where
    • Whether you got the water or gas off
    • The type of hot water unit, if that's the job

Around Thornton, Chisholm and Woodberry most homes are houses, with their own meter, hot water unit and drains, so the shut-off is yours to reach. In central Newcastle most homes are units, and the shut-off for a burst pipe may be in a plant room the strata manager holds the key to. Worth knowing where yours is before you need it.

Common questions

Can I ring at night or on a weekend?

Yes. We're open 24 hours, 7 days, for fire systems and plumbing. Call 0474 659 574.

How soon can you get here?

For an emergency, that depends on where you are and what else is on at the time. Ring us, tell us what's happening, and we'll talk it through. For non-urgent enquiries, we aim to attend within 7 days.

Should I call the fire brigade or you?

If there's a fire, smoke, or anyone is in danger, call Triple Zero (000) first. Call us for a fault in the fire system itself: a damaged hydrant or booster, a leak, a hose reel or sprinkler system that's out of action.

I can smell gas. Who do I ring first?

Get everyone outside, then call the gas faults and emergencies number on your gas bill. On Jemena's NSW gas network that's 131 909. Once the supply is made safe, call us to find and fix the leak.

Where is my water meter?

On most houses it sits in the front yard near the boundary, often in a small box at ground level. Turn off the tap on the meter to shut the water off. In a unit block, ask your strata manager where your unit's shut-off is.

What does an emergency job cost?

We don't publish prices. Ask us on the phone before we come out.
