Booking a job in Tea Gardens

Tea Gardens is about 50 minutes by road from Thornton, so we plan each trip rather than name a time before we know what the job is. The more we know when you call, the better we can fit the drive around it and turn up with the right parts.

Before you ring

  • The street address, and whether it's a house, a unit or a commercial building.
  • What the job is: the system or fixture, and what it's doing or not doing.
  • A photo of the fault, or of the data plate on a hot water unit, if you can take one.
  • Who will be there to let us in, or how we get in if it's a holiday house and you're away.
  • For fire systems, the date on the last service tag and when the next one falls due.

Planned work

Tell us the due date and we'll book a day

Annual hydrant and sprinkler inspections, five-yearly services, a yearly backflow test, or a hot water unit you can see is on its way out. Work you can see coming is the easiest to bring out to Tea Gardens.

Urgent work

Call, whatever the hour

A burst pipe, no hot water, or a fire system that has stopped working. We offer 24/7 emergency services, so call 0474 659 574 and we'll tell you when we can be there. With a burst pipe, turn the water off at the meter while you wait.

Fire protection for Tea Gardens buildings

Nine in ten Tea Gardens homes are separate houses. The unit blocks, holiday apartments and commercial buildings are the ones fitted with hydrants, boosters, sprinklers and fire hose reels, and each of those needs servicing on a set cycle whether the building is full or empty for the off season.

We do this work for fire safety providers, strata managers, commercial building owners and real estate managers: routine servicing to AS 1851-2012, and hydrant installs, alterations and commission testing to AS 2419.1.

Strata and holiday apartment blocks with fire systems need an annual fire safety statement from their owner each year. Our part is the servicing and testing of the hydrants, sprinklers, boosters and hose reels behind it, so book it well before the statement is due and the trip up from Thornton is planned, not rushed.

Plumbing for Tea Gardens homes and holiday houses

Most Tea Gardens homes are houses, and about one in six stood empty on Census night in 2021. Plenty sit quiet for weeks, then fill up for the school holidays, and a full house is when a slow drain, a tired hot water unit or a running toilet makes itself known. A check before the guests arrive is easier to book than a callout halfway through their stay.

Rain, drains and downpipes

Tea Gardens sits about 4 m above sea level on the Myall River, and this stretch of coast gets far more rain than our base. The Bureau of Meteorology's Nelson Bay gauge, across Port Stephens, averaged about 1,350 mm a year, against about 890 mm at East Maitland, next to Thornton. More rain means more water through gutters, downpipes and stormwater lines, so a drain that's slow in the dry is worth clearing before the next wet spell.

Blocked drains and CCTV inspections

Backflow testing in Tea Gardens

Tea Gardens is outside Hunter Water's area. Its water comes from MidCoast Council, and council runs the backflow register for the town. Every testable device on a property has to be tested and certified once a year.

  • Council gives notice 30 days before the yearly test is due.
  • Each testable device carries an annual registration fee from council.
  • The property owner must have the result sent to council within 14 working days of the test.

We do backflow testing and installs, including the valve sets on fire services. Book the test once council's notice arrives and there is time to plan the trip.

Common questions

Do you come out as far as Tea Gardens?

Yes. Our service area is Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast, Maitland, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, Mid Coast and surrounding areas, and Tea Gardens is about 50 minutes' drive from our base in Thornton.

Can you get to Tea Gardens today?

That depends on the job and where we already are that day. We won't name a time until we've heard what's wrong, so call 0474 659 574 and we'll tell you when we can get there. For emergencies we offer 24/7 emergency services.

It's a holiday house and I'm not there. Can you still do the job?

Tell us when you book how we get in, and who we should call with what we find. A photo of the fault or the hot water unit's data plate helps us bring the right parts on the first trip.

Our building's annual fire safety statement is coming up. Where do you fit in?

We service and test the hydrants, sprinklers, boosters and fire hose reels on the building's fire safety schedule. Give us the due date early so the Tea Gardens visit can be booked ahead of it.

Who takes the backflow test result in Tea Gardens?

MidCoast Council, not Hunter Water, because Tea Gardens is on council's water supply.
