What a gas job involves

  1. Check the supply

Look at the gas supply and the pipe already in the house, and whether they can carry the new appliance on top of what's connected now.

  2. Plan the run

Work out the route from the supply to where the appliance is going, and where its shut-off valve will sit so you can reach it.

  3. Run the pipe and connect

Lay the pipe, fit the valve and connect the cooktop, barbecue or water heater.

  4. Test for leaks

Pressure test the new pipework and check each joint before the gas is turned on to the appliance.

  5. Light it and check the flame

Light every burner and look at the flame. A healthy one burns blue, like the cooktop at the top of this page.

Moving a cooktop in a renovation? Gas is easiest to re-route before the new benchtops and splashback go in, so call us while the kitchen is still being planned.

Ventilation for a barbecue in a cabinet

The outdoor kitchen in this photo has a barbecue on top and vents cut into both doors underneath, high and low. They're there because gas that escapes into a closed cupboard has nowhere else to go.

Natural gas is lighter than air and rises. LPG is heavier and settles on the floor of the cupboard. Vents at both heights give either one a way out, instead of letting it build up next to the burners.

  • Airflow through the cabinet under the barbecue
  • A shut-off valve you can reach without pulling the barbecue out
  • Pipe kept clear of the heat and protected where it runs to the bench

Signs a gas appliance needs looking at

Yellow or orange flames

Burners should burn blue. A lazy yellow flame can mean the gas isn't burning cleanly, and poor burning makes carbon monoxide. Stop using it and call us.

Soot or black marks

Dark marks around a burner, the flue or the top of a hot water unit are another sign the gas isn't burning properly.

Burners that won't stay lit

A burner that goes out on its own, or needs several goes to catch, needs checking.

Hot water drops off when the cooktop's on

If one gas appliance falters while another runs, the pipe or supply may not be big enough to carry both at once.

If you can smell gas

  1. Get everyone outside

Don't use light switches, flames or a phone inside.

  2. Turn the gas off

At the meter or gas bottle, and only if it's safe.

  3. Call it in from outside

Ring the gas emergency line printed on your bill: 131 909 on Jemena's NSW network. If anyone is in danger, call 000.

  4. Then call us for the repair

Common questions

Can I change from an electric cooktop to gas?

If the house already has gas, yes. It means running a line from the existing pipe to the kitchen and fitting a shut-off valve for the cooktop. When you call, tell us where the gas meter is and where the cooktop is going.

Why is my cooktop flame yellow?

A gas flame should be blue. Yellow usually means the gas isn't burning cleanly, which can come from a dirty or blocked burner or a fault in the appliance, and poor burning makes carbon monoxide. Turn it off and give us a call.

Do you connect gas hot water?

Yes, gas units included. The hot water page compares gas with the other three types.

Can you connect a barbecue I've already bought?

Yes. Tell us the model and where it's going. A built-in barbecue needs gas run out to the bench and, if it sits over a cupboard, airflow through the cabinet underneath.

Which areas do you cover for gas work?

We're based in Thornton, with Chisholm and Woodberry next door. Maitland is about 12 km away by road, Raymond Terrace about 14 km and Newcastle about 26 km, and our areas page covers the rest.

Can I call about gas at night?

Yes. We're open 24 hours, 7 days. If you can smell gas, get outside and call the faults number on your gas bill first, then call us on 0474 659 574.
